What is Key Development Center (KDC)?

 

KDC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit licensed substance abuse prevention and treatment provider.  KDC offers the entire spectrum of substance abuse services, including primary prevention, education, outpatient treatment, screening, assessment, referral, and follow-up, and dual enhanced treatment. 

 

The mission of KDC is to provide substance abuse education, prevention, and treatment to reduce use and related consequences for the residents of Livingston County.

 

KDC fulfills its mission through:

 

  • increasing the options of substance abuse treatment centers making services for all levels of care accessible within the boundaries of Livingston County;
  • providing the resources for those who cannot access services either through the public system or have insurance coverage that excludes substance abuse services;
  • providing support to allow KDC to develop programming that will meet the emerging needs of the county; and
  • encouraging the social, emotional, and vocational growth of the client.

KDC strives to deliver services in a safe environment, respectful of the individual needs of each client.  KDC is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for outpatient substance abuse treatment and is on panel with the Washtenaw Community Health Organization, Livingston/Washtenaw Substance Abuse Coordinating Agency.

 

KDC has two locations to better serve the residents of Livingston County.  One location is in the Davis Office Center on Grand River in Brighton across from Meijer.  Another location is in the Tenpenney Furniture Building on Grand River in Howell.  Clients may receive most services at the location of their choice.

 

Who can receive services from KDC?

  • Clients without insurance may qualify for financial assistance through Health Services ACCESS.
  • Clients whose primary source of insurance is Medicaid.
  • Clients who have the ability to self-pay or have private insurance.

 

Who provides services at KDC?

KDC has an experienced staff of treatment and prevention specialists who are trained to work in the field of substance abuse.

 

Confidentiality:

All services are confidential and in compliance with state and Federal laws and regulations.

 

 

KDC provides the following services:

 

·         Livingston Youth Prevention*:  Based on the SAMHSA Model Program, Project SUCCESS, this program prevents and reduces substance use and problem behavior among high-risk, multi-problem youth in grades K – 12.  Students participate in group sessions offered at the school that involve skills training and positive peer interaction.  When needed, referrals to community resources are facilitated.

·         S.T.A.R.S. After-School Mentoring Program*:  This program is a collaborative effort with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County.  S.T.A.R.S. is a 10-session program that meets once per week at the school for 1.5 hours and offers third and fourth grade students an opportunity to interact with peers in a positive supervised environment that teaches life skills and stresses academic improvement.  Each participant is assigned a mentor who acts as a role model and provides tutoring.

·         Summer Outreach Program:  This is a five-week program that meets twice per week in the clubhouse of Brighton Village and in the clubhouse of Hometown Howell for two hours each time.  It incorporates skill building and fun activities in a supervised environment.

·         Youth Empowerment Services (YES)*:  Based on the SAMHSA Model Program, Project SUCCESS, YES provides a single point of entry into the substance abuse services system for youth ages 11 to 18 and their families.  YES provides immediate assessment, referral, case management, and follow-up.

·         Livingston Youth Tobacco Education (L.Y.T.E.) Program:  L.Y.T.E. is a one-session, two-hour program that explains the health risks of tobacco use and stresses skill-building strategies to encourage teens to make choices which will benefit their lives.

·         Designated Youth Tobacco Use Representative (DYTUR) – Livingston County*:  The DYTUR provides coordination and advocacy for tobacco reduction projects, including Synar and Non-Synar compliance checks, retailer education, and tobacco prevention and education.  The DYTUR also promotes community-wide tobacco-free norms and provides staffing and assistance for Tobacco-Free Livingston (TFL).

·         Community-Based Insight:  This 3.5 hour program targets youth 11 to 16 who have had minor consequences due to substance use.  The program uses hands-on activities to increase awareness of the consequences associated with substance use and to promote healthy choices.

·         Minor in Prevention (MIP) Education Weekend*:  The MIP Education Weekend is an intensive 3-day intervention (Friday evening through Sunday morning) that provides substance abuse education in conjunction with the ropes courses.  This program targets youth ages 11 to 17.

·         Key I:  Alcohol and Other Drugs Education Program for Youth:  This one-day Saturday program targets youth ages 16 to 20 that have experienced school, family, or legal consequences due to alcohol or drug use.  The program provides education, encourages self-assessment, and promotes healthy choices.

·         Outpatient Treatment that includes special programs for women and adolescents

·         Dual Enhanced Treatment and Psychiatric Services, including evaluation and medication monitoring, for clients who have both a substance abuse and mental health diagnosis.

·         Screening, Assessment, Referral, and Follow-Up (SARF)

·         Secretary of State Driver License Evaluations

·         Urine Drug Screens
